Seedy Saturdays are a remarkable phenomenon!
Seedy Saturdays are a component of Seeds of Diversity, a Canadian grassroots movement. Growing from a group of volunteer activist seed savers in 90s Vancouver, Seeds of Diversity is now an organization with more than 1000 members, holding community events across the country.
Driven by a mission to multiply rare seeds, Seeds of Diversity created Seedy Saturdays: a platform for local communities to exchange seeds, share gardening knowledge, and promote biodiversity. These events aim to counteract the decreasing diversity of plant varieties available in commercial seed catalogs.
Seedy Saturday events typically include seed exchanges, where local gardeners swap seeds they have saved. Events often feature local vendors, gardening workshops, and educational sessions on topics like sustainable agriculture and organic gardening. Seeds of Diversity members package seeds for community seed libraries, and help beginner seed savers learn the easy techniques for growing good seeds.
Community members, gardeners, and organizations shape their own local events. Over time, Seedy Saturday has grown and spread to different regions, becoming an annual tradition in many communities around the world.
